Hello there. Welcome to The Thai Red Cross Society. Where there are blood shortages, Bearhug will be there. My blood. Mine as well. The Red Cross has contacted us since there are not enough blood supplies on hand now. As we’re professionals in blood donation, as we can look from our past, “Imagine if there were people in need of blood and really need your help,” “you are about to make a generous donation for them.” “I’ll donate my money then.” I’ll make it our rules and regulations, if you guys want me to pay your salary, you must come to blood donation first. Normally, we come here by ourselves. But today, The Red Cross invited us, so we asked for permission already. We will take you guys to see the blood donation process. Very exclusive! I had a phobia of needles once. But I have been through facial fillers and Botox, all in Pewdee clinic. Why is your face still like this? (What’s wrong with my face?) Siri, why are your hands shaking today? His hands are so cold and sweaty. Siri, which one are you afraid of the most between cucumbers and needles? A. Cucumbers
B. Needles
C. Both I can’t even string two sentences together now. He is absolutely not okay. (Eating before blood donating) Foods here are so good. (Yummy fried shrimp balls) Bomb, this is how to eat healthy, before blood donation. What kind of this meatball? I think it’s fish ball. You put your finger into my bowl. I give it to you then. Never mind. I wanna give it to you. Lick it also. Don’t be dramatic here. We are very close so we can do like this. Do you repress your emotions? Yummy. Can we eat fried foods when we are about to donate our blood? It’s not that you can’t eat it at all. You should eat something or else you might faint. However, you shouldn’t eat something that is too sweet and salty. And what’s in your mouth is… Fried foods. Wow. It seems like you like it? (Complete Blood Count (CBC) Room) Bye. Why bye? I have a low hemoglobin level. I did do blood drawing. -I can’t do it.
-Again? I intend to donate because it doesn’t come on my period. Sadly, I have a low hemoglobin level and I didn’t sleep well last night. We come like a package, buy 5 get free 3. Both of us didn’t sleep well last night. These two people want to donate the most. See? You talk too much. You never walk the walk though. But I have a low hemoglobin level. As I can’t donate my blood, I’ll take you to the processes. Why are you listening to music? To release my tension. I once donated my blood while I was a reserve officer training corps student. And I almost fainted. -Pity you.
-Okay. I do pity you. What do you call this equipment? It’s a scale. How much blood do you need, like for a guy that weighs around this? 450 ml. Two cartons of milk. Each carton is around 255 ml. right? 2=450 ml. Not a lot huh? Right?! No. Why do you have to tie a rubber band? To increase pressure in blood vessel, and to make blood vessel to stand out more. It is kinda hard to find his vein that can easily be punctured right? In case it isn’t clearly visible, we need to palpate to see it. and get to the biggest one, as the needle is kinda big. (Finger-sized) It’s the etiquette in work not to record the moment that a needle is pushed into the vein. So I will record the face instead. Blood drawing doesn’t hurt at all. I was scared on my first time as well, but once I get used to it… Oh, you almost win our heart. Blood is here. Why is your blood kinda black and looks so evil? It’s like chocolate.
(Are you hungry?) Look at his face. Chiil. -Look at the camera.
-Look at it. -Oh.
-Oh. Finished? Why so silent? How are you? Hello? -Why is he laughing?
-Why? When I clench my fist, it’s like the needle is unstable. Can you imagine? (5 minutes had passed) Oh, 450 ml. already. Completed. Why so fast? They told us that who got a bigger vein will donate faster. It’s faster for blood donation. They finish at the same time. It means Bomb’s is bigger. -What is bigger?
-His vein. He is laughing all the time. From the moment a needle is pushed into the vein until now. When you use your needle with someone, you look much better huh? He is the real MVP. Hey. Do Red Cross sell a handkerchief to wipe his tears? (Try hard not to laugh) Your whole school’s dignity stands right here. He was from Suthiwararam School. -He’s from Chiangmai University Demonstration School
-Yes, I am. This guy from Bangkok Christian College. How about your school? I’m from Suksanari School. Well, I do not meet the minimum haemoglobin level. Your face is like a needle is already pushed into the vein. She just cleans the area with alcohol. Not yet. Siri. You are a Christian, aren’t you? -When you give something with your good heart, you will feel overwhelmed.
-I don’t have a good one right now. There is only fear in my mind. Here it comes! (Fart) (Try not to laugh) Did your eye hurt? -How is your eye?
-A needle is pushed into the vein but his eye hurts. For those gentlemen who want to know how strong you are, take him to blood donation first. And for those ladies who want to know his true colors, take him to blood donation either. Despite you making a generous donation, it is fun and challenging though. Siri, smile now or else Thais will be afraid of blood donating. Siri, your juniors are watching you. Bangkok Christian College. You are happy now. Quickly, please donate a lot of blood to recipients. -Wait.
-I am not delivering a child. You are sucking syrup like a child. Is it good? I wanna try. It’s good. Hey Bomb. (Blood donation done) (Kan’s grandmother is calling right away) Grandmother, can you encourage Siri? Okay, I am cheering you up! Keep fighting. Donate a lot of blood so that you will be thinner, and stay fit. Good luck Siri. And Kan too. After blood donating is done, everyone will get the nourishment. It’s so yummy right? -Yes.
-Who made it? There are donors. -There are donors everyday?
-Yes. -Can I donate bubble milk tea?
-Yes. -Oh.
-Wow. -Can I eat if I didn’t donate?.
-Yes. -Thank you.
-What? Whose quota? -This one.
-Just that? If you have anything you wanna donate to The Red Cross, you can give it to them. It’s priceless when blood donors got to eat something warm like this. Bearhouse’s Bubble milk tea is needed. Oh, so soft. Like I eat a bun which is… I don’t know. It reminds me of Chinese New Year. Because my family always prepares this for me on the table. There are red lamps behind San. Those firecrackers. Oh, I see my grandmother now. Thanks for this Chinese steamed buns. No, it’s from The Red Cross. Welcome to the channel Bearhug. It’s just an intro in the beginning. After this, we will take you to the processes after blood donation. She is Nhoi, the medical laboratory technologist of The Red Cross. After you donate blood, there will be blood samples that have been sent to our department, which is blood analysis department. How do you know which one belongs to whom? -There are specific numbers I guess.
-Yes there are. A unique donation serial number. Then, we will separate blood into each departments. Since the laboratory is an restricted area only for authorized personnel, it is prohibited for the third party to enter without permission from the Thai Red Cross Society and it is required to follow rules and regulations about uniform and behavior. Therefore, Bearhug has a permission to film the processes in order to convey the knowledge to publicity without touching any equipment and instruments inside the laboratory. First of all. we will put the blood sample tubes in the centrifuge. Hello. She will take you to test to determine your blood group. It seems like you know us? I do. Your FC. Are those rice cookers? We separate the components of blood. The very first step before anything else is to separate the components of blood into red blood cells and plasma. Here it comes, our frappe. Pretty fast actually. Imagine when our cells are in the amusement park. -Faster and faster.
-Super fast. So fast that it becomes a still image. (10 minutes has passed) -Oh.
-It stopped now. The particles with different densities precipitate in layers. It’s yellow inside. Oh, like this. Yes, you can see the red blood cells precipitate to the bottom. We only test the plasma so we have to spin it. This is how the lids are opened. Screw cap decapper. In order to prevent blood spillage to the operators. Superb. Below here. Oh, screw caps are all around. This huge machine is for antibody tests. What is an antibody? You guys have learned about it already. It’s those people who do not like one particular band, which is Anti Body. -Anti Bodyslam? (A Thai rock band)
-That’s funny. -Wow, looks so high-tech.
-It looks so.. It picks up. So cool. We are like countryside guys who are looking at some machines doing some stuffs. Negative means that this donor doesn’t have antibodies. What do you mean? Please explain this in an easy way. An easy way… (Antibody can be separated into many categories. If there is no antibody in the blood, then they can do blood transfusion directly. If there is antibody in the blood, then the matching between antibodies and recipients are needed since the incorrect type of antibody has conflict to each other.) It means that donor can donate his blood to the recipient. Okay. If you wanna know more about this, what is your faculty? Medical laboratory. I myself am a human resources graduate. Mine is accountancy. Yeah… This is for blood types and Rh. -Isn’t it enough with only O, A, B, AB?
-No. She is not afraid of falling it off. Yeah. If you want it to fall, let San do it. No way. -Have you ever watched Vagabond?
-Yes. Is it possible to donate his blood right away? Actually, they can’t. -It’s too risky right?
-Yes. In Vagabond, he just asked “Which blood type do you have?” “Is O your blood type?” and he donated his blood right away. In case of emergency, he might be allowed to, if both have O blood type, something like that. -But actually we can’t right?
-Yeah. In that case, he is almost died if no one could save him. He might get shocked or die, something like that. -What if we test our blood type and we do the blood drawing right away, can we do that? No?
-Yeah. -You must come to The Red Cross.
-You must come here. (You must come to The Red Cross) It means Lee Seung-gi does not do the right way. If Lee Seung-gi wants to help, he must go to The Red Cross. -Tell him to come to The Thai Red Cross Society as well.
-Yes. (5 minutes has passed) It means there are 4 of them, A, B, AB, O. Before San decided to study in Accounting, she wanted to be a doctor. She competed in Biology and she had been very close to the Olympics.
-And where did she go to? She only got through the sub-district competition. Invite her to join Bearhug? I will go. The Red Cross, I am sorry. The bubble below there. You see? Blood is here. Draw and drop it, below there. Can you see that tiny table? This one. -Do you know what the whole processes is for?
-For what? So that they’ll know which one can donate blood. (Flirting) -Mor Lab.
-Hello. Does he work here? Is that him? And he got real dark circles under his eyes. His eyes are real. I thought they were retouched. Hello. Why is this room so sci-fi? What is this room called? It’s Nucleic acid testing (NAT). -NAT is for screening blood donations right?
-Yes. What do you do? After the blood is spun, Then we bring the test tube into the screw cap decapper. How come this decapper machine isn’t the same as the previous room? This is the disease control decapper machine. In this room, we a little strict more than the upper room, because the machines are quite sensitive. Hey, you see. It’s spinning and scanning at the same time. Does it need to be this excellent for just decapping? It is for testing the relatively easy to contaminate subjects, since it is DNA testing. It can be translated in Thai as, -delicate testing, easy to contaminate, so it has to be handled with care.
Yes. Wow. This is like a scene in a movie. AVATAR. It will go through this. Why is it very slow? If it goes in so fast, then the accident might happen. Yes, it might spill over. Now, it’s gone. -It’s inside.
-It does go inside instead, doesn’t it? Sounds like R2D2. You seem very curious, San. (Yawn) Yeah, I really do. You just stopped yawning a second ago. (30 minutes had passed) So San would like to make a conclusion. -They have been talking with the operator for half an hour already.
-Yes. In conclusion, they will test for three infections here, HIV, Hepatitis B virus, Hepatitis C virus. These three can spread when people come in contact with the blood. They said that the machine nowadays is the best of our time now. Suppose yesterday you had made love, you were infected but the machine couldn’t find it, the infection could be found later after 7 days. Even with the best machine, it depends on the conscience of donors. If you know that you have a risk, you shouldn’t donate your blood, and if it was our relatives who take the blood, what will gonna happen? That’s why the group of fully-grown man are stressed now. They’re stressed because it hasn’t been 7 days yet. When there is blood transfusion, they need to make sure that the blood is safe, right? Therefore, the form should be filled out truthfully. There is history taking in the form. Somebody doesn’t tell the truth. This is very dangerous for the recipients. They look stressed and guilty. It has nothing to do with me. Here is the room for blood packs. We can see pictures of blood pack on the flute board. Blood from donors are called whole blood. Once the centrifuge is finished, we will get three main components, red blood cells, platelets, and plasma. They call it plasma. In the end, which component will be injected to the recipients? It can be anything depends on what recipients need. For example, the person who has a low hemoglobin level will get red blood cells. Here are the real blood packs. It’s like coconut rice with banana filling production line. What are they doing right now? It looks like they are labeling. When they come, the labels aren’t completed like you guys see right now. they only have the labels on the first bag. As our operators are kinda busy, they put the labels for only the first bag. So we have to put more by ourselves. If we label them later, they might be separated from each other. So we cannot find the right one now. It’s warm. Blood is so warm San. Real blood. Are they volunteers? Yes, The Red Cross Volunteer Bureau. Why don’t you just raise your nephew or niece at home? I’m afraid of Alzheimer’s. If anyone wants to register now, can they just come to The Red Cross? They can register through The Red Cross Volunteer Bureau. As The Red Cross is like an umbrella, there are departments in it. Me and my team is The Red Cross Volunteer Bureau. Apart from making a generous donation, you also get these aunties not lonely at home. They are happy and lively. What’s on the left side? Another type of blood. We’ll filter the white blood cells because they can cause adverse effects of blood transfusion. Maybe a fever. This is the white blood cell filters. So it means the white blood cells are in here right? -Yes, both white blood cells and platelets.
-How does it work? It can filter the white blood cells from platelets up to 99.99% If the recipients receive this blood, it will cause no effects to them. People have their own immune system right. The white blood cells are like contaminants. They would fight each other so recipients can have fever or catch a chill somehow. The centrifugal forces. The electric baking ovens. Blood is spun here. -Put it in and centrifuge right?
-Yes. It’s like the machine from the upper room, but they are tubes. Once it is in a centrifugal force, it becomes this right away. It will precipitate to the bottom of the bag. This is how we centrifuge for separating into platelets These are still precipitating in layers right?
-Yes. It’s called a manual cell separator machine. They will separate it. It takes around a minute. -You stop it by your eyes?
-Yes. Will there be any errors? There are some, but the operators here must be through the test though. It’s almost there now. Wow. -You see?
-She is very accurate. Look at the bag below. Pure yellow. These platelets come from four donors, so they become a big bag of platelets. -Four donors altogether?
-Yes, four donors. -I got it now why there is not enough blood.
-Because it can be used just some parts of it. If I were Dracula, I must send my blood to The Red Cross first so that recipients are safe right? Yes, your blood must be tested first. If you were a ghoul, you can’t eat greedily. You must come to The Red Cross first as well. What is this machine? An automatic cell separator machine. The blood that has been centrifuged will be put in this machine. It has a censer here, the red censer as our eyes in order to measure how it will stop. This one. It separates plasma into the above bag. So fast. And red blood cells would be in the below bag. In the middle here, there are platelets and white blood cells. So you will separate blood into red blood cells, platelets and plasma. Blood will be in a centrifugal force. When it is completed, blood will be separated into three components. Here are red blood cells. And plasma. And here are platelets and white blood cells, which will be separated again. There will be another steps to filter white blood cells and give platelets to those in need. I think it’s about time to show the ‘Bears with brain’ up now. At the end though. Everyone must see the journey of blood now. Today’s clip might contain too much information. Bearhug decided to record the clip at The Red Cross because we would like everyone to donate your blood. Nowadays, even though there are 1.800-2,000 donors, there is still not enough blood because, as you can see, blood that can be used is insufficient for those in need. If you are healthy and ready, please come to donate. Prepare yourself, get the dish on nutrition and don’t have a low hemoglobin level like me. Think like this, the blood will be donated to our relatives. If you got infectious disease or if you are in doubt or not sure, you can’t donate yet as well. I would like to share this with political groups. There were both walking and running. How about donating for and against dictatorship. Let’s run a race, therefore we will have blood for the nation. No need to have a bloodbath, but The Red Cross will take your blood instead. -I will manage both pages so as to get blood donating.
(#DonatingAgainstMosquitoes)
-For what again? And for teenagers, if you are bored of ‘holidays are for hanging out’, you and your friends can donate your blood. Isn’t that cool? Yeah. And we’ll know who is willing to do it. We have one member who is kinda afraid of injection. Where will you go on a date? Have a nice meal, go to Lumphini park to run or walk… Healthy is a trend for this year. You will have a chance to know whether they are like Bomb. What?! It’s also a way to check up your health. Like me. I know now I have a low hemoglobin level. If someone has chances of getting HIV, for example, they will contact you back for a check-up again. So everyone, let’s donate our blood. And Kan, do not forget to create the two pages. If you wanna know where to donate blood, I will put the information below the description. Bye. Can you see it’s purple now? I donate a drop of blood.
