10 different ways of using Diabolique (Free VST plugin)

in this video I’m showing you ten
different ways of using Diabolique Diabolique is an emulation of two old
vacuum to reel to reels: the 1962 Revox F 36 and the 1958 Tandberg model 3
I start this video comparing two sound cards this one from the 50s and this one
from the 21st century jokes apart, this is an external
preamplifier that you need to use with a tandberg model 3 to be able to record in
stereo. The recorder by itself can all record in mono but it can play in stereo
though. Probably the most unexpected way that you can use it is as a send effect
a tape emulation plug-in as a send effect??? yes, you can use it as a send
effect, in this case I want to saturate this bass but I do not want to destroy
the original signal, I simply want to add something to it so you can generate harmonics and in
this case I use a low-cut plugin afterwards to remove the low frequencies
and getting only the mid and high frequencies. I confess that this track is
probably not the best example to show you this trick
the bass has the type of sound that is good for this trick but the track itself
is too clean to be able to get this treatment… you get trick… so this is a
good way to add some kind of harmonics and sparkle to the
sound and bring it more up to the mix… so using Diabolique as a send effect… most probably an unexpected usage but a valid one. One creative way to using it
is as a noise machine you can use it to simulate old recordings changing noise profile Only noise old recording Now a different thing. Just watch this: we are going to create a new file and we are going to use
Diabolique to generate noise. There – only noise… there you go… now we are going to
work it out so a quick effect… immediate effect with diabolic
providing the noise… one great trick that One great trick Diabolique gives us is to use it as a drum
limiter… amazed? yeah so you can use it as a tape compressor to compress the peak
of your drums and I’ll show you how to do it so… every drum goes to bus one and
in there I have diabolique… you can see the peaks,
they go way high and as soon as I use Diabolique they
came down 4 dBs I just gained here as you can see it’s a good trick to get some three four
decibels to avoid red clipping and to get a better mix so over driving the plugin can also work but it sounds a bit different So most probably, you never thought about this
but as you can see it can be used as a drum limiter one neat way to use diabolique is to warm
up your sounds in this particular track it sounds I don’t know a bit cold so I’m
trying to use Diabolique to warm it up I am getting rid of system noise and the
vintage control because I do not want changes in the sounds by adding noise or
changing frequency spectrum but I do want a bit of saturation the trick here
is to use up to 25% I think you can hear the difference if you use more than 25% we start adding
too much distortion you can change to circuitry 2 – to the Tandberg sound it’s a bit different as you can hear now 15% let’s push it and see the difference using a tape emulation plug-in to warm up
your sounds may be a good neat trick because the tube saturation adds a bit
of sparkle to the sound one obvious way to use Diabolique is to dirty sound, to add noise, to distort … This is a particularly good plugin to do that, it’s an old reel-to-reel tape emulation so you can do some crazy things with it
let’s see so using the input level
to change the behavior of diabolique in this case to push it harder using all options clean sound let’s see change in behavior by changing
inputs levels total destruction a great way to destroy your sounds usable for instance as a bad
recording, as an old recording, things like that… another possible way of using
diabolique is to make it as a vintage machine by not using system noise and
saturation and only the vintage knob which changes frequency response then
you can use tube saturation and/or system noise to change the sound it depends on if you want to use it as a
tape or not with the help of an EQ you can simulate
old radios old record players and other stuff as you can hear by changing circuitry
you can always have a second option Use Diabolique to recreate an old
sound system one amazing thing that this digital world allows us is to do things that in the old days it was not possible for instance we can use Diabolique to
make a multitrack tape session that could never exist in the 50s because you could
not unify five six seven recorders to play at exactly at the same time this is
a session I’m going to play that simulates multitrack session recorded on
tape – one Diabolique per channel as you can see the effect is subtle
but it is there in the old days you would record a
second recorder so there’s one diabolique also in the master channel… now without
the effect and with so using diabolic as a multitrack tape
recorder that has never existed most people use this as a saturation
plugin… let’s see how this bass can be saturated… let’s add harmonics to this
thing if you look at the picture in the totalizer in the right low corner you can see that when it acts, sound really changes… the vacuum tubes have amazing
harmonics that you can benefit to your sound this particular track is not the best
example to show you how to use it as a saturation plugin but I think that you
get the point obviously you can use it as a tandberg model three emulation… to do that you just have to open the plug-in and click
in circuitry 2. Instant tandberg model three sound. This reel to reel was built in
Norway and it came with Telefunken tubes so it sounds very good the problem of my
unit is that it never had any kind of maintenance so many electrical
components are way out of date and they need replacement… it will be repaired
soon… so if you like, this plug-in emulates one good reel to reel and a bad one… I mean they are amazing units but one had maintenance the other had not this recorder never had a 15 inch per
seconds option but I included it in the plugin so instant Tandberg sounds with a
free plugin one of the most obvious utilities of Diabolique is to be used as a Revox F36 emulation… to do this you
have only to open the plugin… this is a vacuum tube reel-to-reel with 13 vacuum tubes
inside by turning it on, it is in Revox F 36 mode, so after that you can change
tube saturation, system noise and you can even change the frequency response by
using the vintage knob you can also change tape speed… vintage
tape was used to model this plugin you can also change the input level to
change the behavior if you need old tape reel-to-reel sounds then this is it I hope you have enjoyed this video, if so
