17. Check Out Our Brand New Narrowboat!
Today, we’ve been to Aintree Boats in
Liverpool. We first saw them down at Crick earlier, in May, and we met Mark and Jamie
and the team, and they do build some nice boats, whether it’s a shell or a sail
away or fully a fitted boat, there’s quite a lot going on in the factory. Very noisy! (Very noisy background). Here we are at Aintree Boats!
No. Don’t try and talk That was an experience. And, well that’s
why we’re here really. We’ve got something to show you. This shell. The baseplate, and the sides,
and the bow, and the stern that are all taking shape. This is the backbone of our
new 57 foot narrow boat, Silver Fox, and over the next few weeks
once the shell’s complete she’s going to take a short journey across Liverpool
where she’s going to become a Bickerstaffe. So let’s tell you about our brand new boat.
I’m sure you’re dying to hear about it, and me and Shaun are dead excited too – so excited.
We’ve been wanting to tell you for like a week now, but we had to wait until we
got to Aintree to get some footage of the shell itself, and then it just all
seemed so real. It’s gonna be 57 feet. It’s a Cruiser stern. It’s gonna be
fitted out at Bickerstaff boats just outside Liverpool, and it’s got all the
things that we wanted. Remember that Crick video? Day two where we sat at the side of
the car saying we want this, this, this, and this. Some people were saying no you’re not going to get everything you want. You’re gonna
have to compromise. But we are! We got everything we want. So we’ve got the double hatches, which you know I want. We’ve got a great galley.
We’ve got the Pullman dinette, which is great for me and work it’s what I wanted.
We’ve got a TV. A nice large TV. We’ve got the stove, got the walkthrough bathroom. We’ve got the double bed with a bed extension. And everything else!
We’ve got pram and cratch covers going in there. Three kilowatt inverter.
Got a great set of batteries going in there. It’s gonna be six 165 amp-hour batteries
with 400 watts of solar panels, and these are kind of flexible panels that sit on
the roof. They’re very kind of flush to the roof. You can walk over them,
yeah, and it’s just really great we’re so excited aren’t we? Well, the Aintree Shell wasn’t really
a consideration because it could have been an Aintree or a Tyler Wilson, and I think
the money involved, I know that certain shells cost more than others, but we heard
a lot of good things about Aintree shells. So you might be asking what
led us to choose a Bickerstaff boat? It’s a tough one to answer because we’ve
seen so many nice boats – loads – and we’re not saying that the Bickerstaff boat is
better than the other boats. And I think that’s been the issue. That’s the reason
it’s been tough to decide because we’ve seen some boat builders that we really
got on with and really like, and it comes down to, for us, who we felt we have
that connection with kind of moving forward. and the Bickerstaff thing felt
like a family. We felt at home. We did feel at home. They haven’t built a
boat that we don’t like. The other customers that have had boats have
got nothing but good things to say, and we just felt like part of the family
as soon as we walked through the door for the first time. And we’ve been back a
couple of times since to see them, and we just felt this connection – yeah we did – it just felt right, and so after a bit of kind of digging and looking and
thinking and going to Aintree to see the shells and everything, here we are! So, what next?
Well, the boat’s still in build at Aintree Boats and once the shell’s completed
it’s gonna take a little lorry journey up here to Bickerstaffe Boats where it’s
gonna be fitted out. And we’re going to share the entire process with you.
We’re going to carry on with the weekly vlogs. We’re going to be taking photos and
videos explaining what’s going on with the build. All the materials, the workmen,
you’re gonna get to know those too. And we’re going to share it all with you,
right from its early stages as a shell as it is now, right through until it’s
fully fitted out. We’re gonna walk you through each stage, right up until we take it on the lorry to the Leeds & Liverpool Canal and launch it. Shaun’s just wet himself with excitement! (laughs). If you’ve got any questions about anything to do
with either our vlogs or the build of the boat, just drop us a comment
