– Everybody in the hood
watch Ideastream, you know. Y’all watchin’ When
Ideastream Meets the Hood. (R and B beats music) (Brandyn laughs) My name is Brandyn Armstrong, and I’m the inventor of the Studio Stick, the world’s first portable
recording studio for smartphones. Coming from the hood it’s a struggle. It’s like we kind of
forced to do certain things that the suburban kid wouldn’t have to do. I got a lot of my hustle and grit from my father. He was killed when I was
around the age of four. He had the hustle mentality in my family. You know, he used to sell a
lot of things in the streets so I think I took his hustle mentality and turned them into something positive. Hey grandma, say something
nice to the camera about me. My grandmother, she taught
me how to play a little piece of a song too. A lot of people don’t know. I spent a lot of my childhood here in my grandmother’s house. (piano keys plink) (Brandyn laughs) Growing up, the house used to
look a lot better than this. You gonna play a song real quick, Grandma? – No, I’m not a musician, my sister is. – Yes, you, Grandma. – Okay. Jesus keep me near the cross. – I definitely plan on
getting my granny a new house once I blow up and get successful. It’s a lot of houses
in the hood like this. I been making music ever
since the age of five. Throughout my music career I
always had the same problem. Not having enough money for studio time and not being able to
capture my creative ideas those moments that I was inspired. And the studio Stick is the solution to all of those problems. And one day I was in my room and I wanted to go to a recoding studio. I really didn’t have any money at the time and I was thinking that
there had to be a solution. And then I thought of the Studio Stick. Alright so here we go. The first prototype I made, it was actually out of a broomstick. I heard of a business
competition at my school. Cardboard, carpet foam. I ended up winning $1,500 there. Coat hanger and duck tape. And ever since then I just been
on a roll with the product. We’re in my office at MAGNET, Manufacturing and Growth Network. I actually won this office through a business competition called [M]SPIRE. But engineers here at MAGNET help me to get my product off the ground. The actual casing was 3D printed. The reflector filter
prevents your voice from echoing around the room. The microphone instantly
enhances the quality of recording and the phone holder is where you put your phone
to connect everything. This has been amazing, the
different connections and people that I’ve been able
to get from this thing. I was just on Steve
Harvey not too long ago. – Are you serious man? – I actually met a
producer for a television show with Steve Harvey and the producer liked my
product and I made it through. (rhythmic beats) ♫ I just did a session with Ideastream ♫ I just did a session with Ideastream I really don’t feel like I’m
nowhere near success because I actually want to see
my product in stores all around the world. Right now we only have the prototype. I’m still hustling to get
to where I need to be. My plans is to put on for my neighborhood like once I get successful. I’m just really showing them
that the dream is possible. And you can live your
dream in a positive way. That’s all I got. I aint never get to finish it. That’s all I put together so far. (Brandyn laughs) (rhythmic beats)
