Brad Johnson here from Johnson.Audio and
I’m here to talk to you today about building a recording studio the
essential things you need to consider before taking that deep dive now there’s
going to be two different ways that you can go about building a recording studio
some of you most of you are thinking about just going ahead and getting
something to be able to record your own songs and that is a great investment if
you have the time to learn the skill on the crap now I did talk about this
particular subject in the essential home studio recording setup and I felt like
this little this little nugget needed just to be a little bit more impact and
this is actually knowing if you are actually built to you know start
developing the craft recording developing the craft and mixing
developing the craft of mastering and really going forward doing it yourself
or if you’re better suited just to stick with the craft of songwriting and
building that craft out and finding somebody else you can complement that
and record for you now you might also be somebody who’s listening to this and
it’s actually an engineer and not a songwriter and so you already know that
you want to build your own studio and that is the craft that you that should
give to the music world and this video is also for you so listen up so if you
are a songwriter and you want to go ahead and you want to build a recording
studio and you want to have you know just the bare bones to be able to start
recording go for it it’s really not that expensive these days to get you know go
and check out my video essential home studio setup and you will find out that
it does not take a lot to start to start this on this endeavor now the thing that
I want to warn you songwriters about who are getting into this is to give me
nowadays with you know YouTube you’re on YouTube right now watching this on you
have Google everything you can find so much information about home studio
recording you can find so much information about recording in general
now you can start going down the rabbit hole of thinking that you’re going to
need to get more things and get into gear acquisition syndrome gasps it just
makes you bloated it actually takes you away from your craft trust me I am
guilty of this but I also wanted to know that I spent about five six years with
just my daugh my interface and my microphone I use all my or all my on you
know native plugins that were just included in my doll I used all his
software since then including my doll I am you know used everything that was
stock and I did not upgrade I think I bought my first third-party plug-in like
four or five years after just learning how to just record and you know what
took to get a good you know acoustic guitar recording and vocal recording and
just failing after failing and trying failing trying feeling trying and just
that’s how I got good at how I got better at it you know good as subjective
I still got a lot to learn within this but I mean I have released a recording
my own youth that I recorded so I would say that you need to be aware of that
just do not fall into the trap of thinking that you’re going to need you
know all this other stuff to make your recordings actually sound good it’s
going to take time but that being said as your skills start to develop and you
want to throw in a third party plug-in here and there that you feel like you
know go for it if you feel like you can afford it and you want it you know you
want to go into that you know I would say you know there’s definitely plus
sides to those um but don’t get stuck in thinking you need to get all of them and
or you start getting in the habit of all you’re doing is you know researching
reviewing researching and buying and trying and buying and that just it’s a
bad just a bad game to get into but like I said I mean I’m speaking from my own
I’m speaking at myself with this one because I do definitely follow that
tracks I love it I love looking at different kind of gear and all that and
but I you know I don’t want to take away from your songwriting crap so
make sure that you are focusing on what matters and that’s the song we’re here
to serve a song if the gear does not serve a song or you can help you create
songs and forget about it now if you’re an engineer and your thing
about building a studio most likely you are actually looking at investing in
some quality gear and that’s totally fine
that’s totally something that I think you should be looking at it this is
going to be like your main skill it’s not going to be a bad thing to have some
gear behind you that you know that you can work with that will be a really
efficient tool because really what we’re looking for in good gears efficiency we
want to be able to spend less time trying to find mike places and those
with less time to mix and once then less time you know the time is money in the
engineering game and so but the thing you have to think about when it comes to
starting your own studio as an engineer is are you going to be home studio any
professional studio is any combination of both what are you trying to do now in
its you know a producer friend of mine had a story for me so he said that I
mean he’s he just did a lot of his recordings starting out in other
people’s studios he worked in a studio in Seattle and he you know once told me
hey so I had you know a competent up a studio across town for me and they got
they went all to the nines with their gear they got all the updated you know
house I had all the the greatest gear and greatest microphones and it built up
his beautiful studio and this guy came to my friend and said hey you know you
know just wanted to know that I opened up a studio and I just want to apologize
in advance if you know I kind of you know affect your business a little bit
and you know it was funny because my friend had the foresight to know not to
feel threatened by this person because my friend had a name this guy didn’t and
guess what that guy studio is now closed my friend’s studio is thriving and the
reason is because is a person that they are hiring not the
gear that’s important we repeat that going to you that they want to hire not
your gear some people will be tricked into the gear that you have but for long
standing for a long lasting business you have to be good at your craft and you
have to be able to build your clientele and you’re going to have to achieve that
clientele and do awesome work you can do awesome work with not you know all the
state-of-the-art gear or vintage gear or having all amazing stuff it’s going to
come out of your ingenuity your creativity and it’s going to be you and
the way they use your songs and how you get that out of artists that’s going to
matter now I’m going to recommend that if you’re going to start building your
own studio start small start with the necessities just like a songwriter would
if you don’t have it already if you already have that and you don’t have
enough business to be able to upgrade your stuff then don’t upgrade stick with
what you got work with what you got and do not go into debt do not pull out a
big fat loan for a bunch of gear because it’s not a good investment nowadays if
you just look at the trend of everything everything is going smaller everything
is moving more in the box you know you do you’re going to have
people are going to romanticize and want to look backwards and get those awesome
rack here and there’s a place for it if you can afford it it’s expensive I mean
for one nice vintage compressor you’d be looking at 3 grand 2 grand 3 grand nice
and vintage microphone you can be looking at anyone with 3 granted up and
it’s just a lot of capital and it’s to me the return on that investment is
getting smaller and smaller so just think about that I’m probably not a lot
of people would disagree with me on that trust me I would love to have real
vintage la-2a and all these things in my studio but I don’t but you know what a
lot of plugins really are that good I have worked with a real la-2a
and I’ve worked on a nice council and guess what like I also use plugins that
are so to emulate those things in at the end of the day it’s like tomato
tomahto you’re not going to really you know there’s so much there’s so much
debate about it but you’re really splitting hairs you’re trying to find a
needle in the haystack and it really is just taking away from people actually
making songs and that’s really I mean I’m guilty of it trust me
I’m guilty of it I have spent time and time again trying to you know research
and learn but you know my loss is going to be your gain if you’re listening to
this video just trust me focus on the song and the
crap is going to have better return on your investment and I really think that
this you know really covers a deeper dive into what it actually looks like if
you’re planning on stepping into Zuri you have substances and want to grow
this thing you’re going to have to know that it’s right for you timing is
everything do not jump the gun if you can’t afford
it without if you can’t afford it without going to debt don’t do it you
know work a little harder though foot pizzas or whatever you need to do pick
up the extra job if you need to if you’re looking this to get started and
you get a computer stuff stood every can don’t go into debt that’s a whole nother
story a whole another video that I’ll make but you know I just really
appreciate you taking time to listen to me on the subject I’m sorry the lighting
super weird right now it’s morning time I am you know increase I try to find a
