ELECTIONS ARE RIGHT AROUND
THE CORNER. TWO CHATHAM COUNTY
LEADERS WANT TO MAKE SURE
EVERYONE WHO HAS THE RIGHT
TO VOTE… GETS THE CHANCE. WJCL’S SHARON JOHNSON
HAS THE DETAILS ON A NEW
VOTING INITIATIVE AT THE
CHATHAM COUNTY DETENTION

SHERIFF WILCHER AND BOARD
OF ELECTIONS MEMBER ANTWAN
LANG ARE TEAMING UP TO
REGISTER INMATES TO VOTE. THE LEADERS SAY NON-
PARTISAN GROUPS WILL COME
IN TO THE JAIL AND SURVEY THE
INMATES. INMATES WHO HAVE NOT BEEN
CONVICTED OF A FELONY WILL
BE ABLE TO REGISTER TO
VOTE… AND WILL BE ABLE TO
USE THE JAIL AS AN ADDRESS
FOR AN ABSENTEE BALLOT. THEY’LL BE ABLE TO MAIL THE
ABSENTEE BALLOT IN TO CAST
THEIR VOTE. WILCHER AND LANG SAY THEY
DECIDED TO LAUNCH THIS
PARTNERSHIP SO THAT
EVERYONE HAS A VOICE IN THIS
YEAR’S CONTENTIOUS
ELECTIONS. “YOU GOT A LOT OF PEOPLE IN
HERE… YOU KNOW, JUST
BECAUSE YOU GET STOPPED IN
THE STREETS FOR SUSPENDED
LICENSE, NO INSURANCE,
THAT’S NOT A CONVICTION TO KEEP YOU FROM VOTING. IT HAS
TO BE A FELONY.”- SHERIFF

COUNTY DETENTION CENTER TO
SURVEY AND IDENTIFY VOTER
ELIGIBLE INMATES. THE VOTER REGISTRATION
DEADLINE FOR GEORGIA’S
PRESIDENTIAL PRIMARY IS
FEBRUARY 24TH. REPORTING IN SAVANNAH, SJ,
WJCL 22 NEWS. THE GEORGIA PRIMARY I
MARCH 24TH, AND THE SOUTH
CAROLINA PRIMARY IS
FEBRUARY 29TH. YOU CAN TRACK THE
