Crate Diggers Ep#1 – Soul Funk Disco | Vinyl Record Collection [Eng Sub]
Hi everyone ! Welcome to Top Shelf ! Today we are introducing a new format of Top Shelf Some of us on YouTube asked us if we could make episodes that would be entirely dedicated to record selections We thought about this possibility with the rest of the team By the way I would like to thank my team, Marwan & FX who do a great job! We found this concept interesting We decided that we will give it a try in addition to the normal Top Shelf episodes that we will continue to do From now on, we will be doing episodes on specific topics such as “Brit Funk”, “Japanese Funk” Talking about “Japanese Funk”… FX (Fanateek One) is currently working on a special episode on this So we hope these episodes will please you So I made a record selection… It wasn’t easy! I struggled quite a lot! This is my selection right here. About 10 records. More or less… We gonna start right now with a band that I love: Starpoint One of my favorite bands If I had to choose one album from them, that would be “All Night Long” (1982) It includes several monster gems “Bring Your Sweet Lovin’ Back”, the stepper “All Night Long” “I Like It” with its monster slap bass in the intro And my personal favorite “Miracle Love” that I adore! This is album is not too hard to find. I really recommend it. Next… Let’s move to something more exotic About 3 years ago, I started to get into Brazilian Funk I randomly came across videos on YouTube like Marcos Valle “Bicicleta” I liked this stuff so I started to dig into this kind of music. If I had to choose one album that would be the Sandra Sa LP released in 1983 Sorry for my awful accent… I think this album is very solid very rare too I took me a while to find a copy There’s some great tracks on it We could mention “Candura” Then… The Whispers… No need to introduce this band Classic band on the famous Californian label SOLAR Frankly… I think this is my all time favorite band I like their whole discography from the 70’s to the late 80’s stuff. But my favorite album is this one “Love Is Where You Find It” released in 1981 All the songs are brilliant! No fillers on this album, only killers! I particularly love the way they organized the songs between both sides With one side “For Dancin” with all the uptempos and on the flip “For Romancin'” with all the mellows/midtempos I really go crazy for this LP! Besides, this album is very cheap. You really need that one! Now we’re moving to a completely different style Some late 80’s Brit Street Soul For those of you who follow us, you probably know that we’re very much into this late 80’s stuff We really like this period The one I have here is from Tongue N Cheek “Don’t Stop The Love” Released on Criminal Records in 1987 It is interesting to mention that Delroy Murray from the band Total Contrast was also part of this band. If you don’t know Tongue N Cheek, I invite you to check them out. They made a few good songs Not everything is good with this band but some good ones Then what do we have… Toshiki Kadomatsu Classic Japanese Funk So far I only knew this album “After 5 Clash” (1984) with the Boogie killer “Step Into The Light” and recently after visiting my friend FX in Spain He made me discover another album by Toshiki released 2 years before in 1982 which is excellent but in a different style. much more Jazz Fusion oriented with ultra chill vibes Ultra tropical I’m really into that kind of music lately Thank you FX, you really made me happy with this one! Now this is a big big crush Bobby Nunn “Private Party” released on Motown (1983) This is one of the first artist I discovered back in the days when I started to listen to Funk music If I had to choose one song on this album It would be “Don’t Knock It (Til’ You Try It)” This song is so freaking good! I never get tired of this song! I’ve been listening to it for the last 15 years! I could also mention “Private Party” a classic track with an ultra fat and greasy bass I had the chance to meet Bobby Nunn when I went to L.A. with FX in 2015 We made an interview with him that you can find on our website. Then what’s next… “Disco Strut” by Cream De Coco Back to disco I adore this single Released on the small label Free Spirit in 1976 This song really put me in a really relaxing mode, crazy chill! Special shout out to our friend Hassan aka Centralline from Los Angeles who’s crazy about this song! I clearly recommend it This 12” has been re-issued in 2014 on UK label. Now we’re talking about my Holy Grail ! Larry Wu – “Let Me Show You” released on Atlantic Records in 1984 It took me a while to find this copy I discovered it back in 2004 with the cd compilation “Nighttime Lovers” Vol 2 There are 2 different press of this song one with the instrumental version on the flip which is the one I’m showing right now The one with the instrumental is the rarest one If you like Larry Wu, I also recommend you to check the album from the band Modernique, Larry was part of this band. this was released in 1987 There is one or two good tracks on it. My favorite one is “So Much Love” Now we’re talking about a label I do really love that most of us might know Sam Records Greg Henderson “Dreamin” (1982) Again I’m in love with this 12” Greg Henderson released a second single More electro and much more difficult to find in 1984 For me this is a monster gem it’s called “Never Too Late (To Find A Love)” on Rain Records The synth solo in the break is just insane, it drives me nuts!!! I really recommend it Next In a completely different style This is something I recently discovered on the French label owned by Pascal Rioux (Charles Maurice) Favorite Recordings A Brazilian album by Lucas Arruda called “Solar” released in 2015 This album is beautiful! If you dig Jazz Funk/Fusion with Brazilian influences You will love this album The song that really made it for me is “Melt The Night” featuring Leon Ware Pure beauty! You really need this one, it’s not expensive I will not be recommending modern releases very often but this one really deserves some recognition So we’re done with this selection! I hope you liked it See you next time for another episode Bye Bye!
