– Hey guys, it’s Halsey and
I’m gonna talk you through one of my favorite songs on my album, Hopeless Fountain Kingdom, Bad At Love. So, Bad At Love is a song that I wrote kind of mid record, I was
halfway through a break up, sitting on my couch, eating ice cream, chocolate chip cookie dough,
watching Romeo and Juliet over and over again on the TV, probably not showering
as much as I should have and I found this box
of mementos in my room that was kind of like relics of old relationships I’d been
with, like movie tickets and stuffed Pokemon and old
pins and patches of like, Sailor Moon and anime
and kind of going through one by one in my head, thinking about each individual relationship
and what I did to fuck it up. And it started with a guy
that I was seeing at the time and in the song I say, “I’ve
got a boy back home in Michigan and it tastes like Jack
when I’m kissing him.” because he loved Jack Daniel’s. He used to drink Jack
Daniel’s whiskey all the time, probably too much honestly. And I say, “i told him that I never really liked his friends.” because honestly they sucked. And that “Now he’s gone and
he’s calling me a bitch again. There’s a guy that lives
in the Garden State and he told me that we’d
make it ’til we graduate.” which is about my high
school boyfriend that I had that I totally thought I was in love with. There was a quickcheck in our neighborhood and used to go and get like, milkshakes and blue red
icees and cold clo freezies all the time and I still love him, he’s a sweetheart and maybe one day we’re gonna get married, who knows. “I got a girl with California eyes.” because she had, bright, bright blue eyes, like the sky in LA, what I imagined the beach on like a perfect
day in Malibu would be like. “London girl with an attitude, we never told no one, but we look so cute. Both got way better things to do, but I always think about it
when I’m riding through.” because every time I’m in London, I think about this one
girl that I was dating that I didn’t tell anybody I was dating. I was at a point in my life where I was keeping my relationships really private, which was exciting and exhilarating but kinda made me feel like
I was committing a crime which was not how a relationship
is supposed to feel. The whole song is about
me being bad at love, but you can’t blame me for trying. Bad At Love in particular, I wrote with my friend, Ricky Reed. Ricky has this really awesome studio in LA and its got a living wall in it, which is a wall that’s
completely filled with plants and with greenery from floor to ceiling. It’s literally a living
wall and I kept telling him, “I really want this song to sound like, Leonardo DiCaprio in a Hawaiian t-shirt in a drop top low convertible car, driving down the highway
like in Miami Vice with all of his friends and just like, youthful and reckless, like Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo and Juliet.” and he was like, “oh, okay, I got it.” he sent me back one version of the song, I said, “more guitars.” he sent me back another
version of the song and I said, “Ricky, I don’t
see Leo, I need to see Leo.” and by the fourth or fifth try, he sent it back and it felt perfect. And now every time I hear
this song or play this song, I see Leo in his Hawaiian T shirt, riding down the highway, jumping around the backseat with his friends and just singing about how
they’re bad at love.
