How to Rap: A Beginner’s Guide to Recording Vocals in the Studio { First American Rapper in Russia }

In this video I’m going to tell you about how to record high-quality vocals when you go to the recording studio. Right now, we’re in a home studio, in a recording booth. Here you can see the microphone. The microphone should have a pop filter. If it doesn’t have a pop filter, you probably wanna find a different studio. The pop filter protects the microphone from spit and it also takes out some dirty or ugly sounds that come out of the voice naturally you’re singing or spitting. Not everybody has this and not everybody does this, but some people put something, like a pencil or a pen in the middle of the pop filter to separate the direction of the sound, especially this helps with sounds like “essss”, “pppee”, “tttee”, and other sounds that produce unnecessary air out of your mouth and might hit the microphone and cause a “popping” sound. The pop filter shouldn’t be right next to the microphone and it shouldn’t be too far away from the microphone. You need to stand near the pop filter, but not touch the pop filter with your mouth. When you’re talking you should speak directly into the microphone. So, it’s a big mistake that a lot of people make when they don’t speak directly into the microphone but they kind of go from the side, over here, or the microphone’s too low and they speak down to the microphone. You don’t wanna do that. You wanna make sure that the microphone and the microphone stand are all situated exactly how they need to be so that it’s the right height, so that it’s comfortable for you to spit, to do your thing. What’s the right height of the microphone? The right height of the microphone is like right now, so that I can stand normally and I don’t need to move my head down or up in order to speak directly into the microphone. When you’re rapping or singing it’s really tempting to move your arms and move your head to get into the music, but you should avoid doing it as much as possible because you’re just going to create some kind of “wind” or hit the microphone or do something else that’s going to ruin that take. So, there’s really no reason to do it. A lot of people do it just because they get emotional and they get into it but you don’t really need to do that, and you should try not to. You’re in the booth, not to perform, but to get the best result of a recording. If you’re on the stage, of course, jump around, but if you’re in the booth, there’s no need to do that. Another thing that a lot of people do is when they have their text on a piece of paper or, for me on my phone they hold it up, above the microphone, and look up. And then they don’t speak directly in the microphone. Or hold it down, or off to the side, and then they speak like this. Yeah, maybe your face or your head is looking directly at the microphone but when you turn your eyes to read your text, you’re not speaking directly in the microphone. No matter how hard you try. So, what you should do is pin your text to the wall of the booth. Or make sure, if you’re gonna hold your text, that you hold it directly behind the microphone so that you can speak into the microphone comfortably and directly. Another thing that you have to remember is that if you have your text on a piece of paper if you’re moving the paper around you might have some kind of sound that’s distracting and takes out some of the quality of the recording, because moving paper near the microphone while you’re trying to record – of course, nobody wants to hear that in the background. Another thing that you should do is, if people in the studio are talking, while you’re recording you should tell them to be quiet. If they’re not going to be quiet, then there’s no reason for you to come to the studio and there’s no reason for you to record. So, it’s your job to make sure that the environment around you is quiet and correct for recording. If you have a problem setting up the microphone stand, the pop filter, if you can’t find a good place to put your lyrics, if people are making sound in the studio, tell the sound engineer. And if he doesn’t help you, then you need to find another studio because in a good studio even if it’s a home studio, people should respect the fact that you are recording. That’s what you came here to do. That’s what you should do. I hope you enjoyed this video.
