IK Multimedia iLoud MTM Review (Portable Studio Monitors)

December 8, 2019 3 By Kailee Schamberger

hey guys how’s it going Alex Scott here
with consorrdini.com thank you so much for checking out another one of our
super cool studio gear reviews today we are taking a look at an incredibly cool
speaker that I just picked up after hearing some seriously great hype about
it this is the iLoud MTM now what is this speaker exactly well it’s really
designed as a full range full performance studio monitor in an
incredibly small compact and lightweight package it also has some incredibly cool
and innovative features which is why I picked it up I’m gonna be doing a lot
of traveling next year and kind of doing production work on the road so I needed
a pair of workhorse monitors that didn’t break the bank were super small and
lightweight but still sounded really really great and these I think are the
best possible option for that but they’re not only great for traveling
they would be great for really any recording studio use that you guys would
ever need them for whether you have a small home studio or you know like I
said a mobile production rig these are really incredibly cool speakers now
obviously as we’ve reviewed studio monitors on this channel in the past
there’s really no way to show you guys how good these things sound so really
I’m just gonna be doing kind of a quick overview on the features and then
telling you about how they sound to my ear which spoiler alert they are
incredible I mean absolutely incredible features wise that’s one of the things
that really drew me to these monitors when I very first heard about them they
are incredibly full-featured for the size and for the price they retail right
now for 349 each or 700 for a pair which is a little bit steep for small monitors
but when you factor in the tech that these guys come with its really a
bargain to be honest with you so taking a look at the back we have a ton of
tuning options this is really really awesome if you’re you know kind of more
of a pro engineer like myself and you need to be working especially in a lot
of different rooms you know again speaking to the portability of these
using them for like a mobile production rig we have low-frequency extensions
select we have plus two flat or three DB on the lows same for the highs and then
we have desc flat or cal now this is the most interesting switch on the back
of these desk obviously you would hit if you got him just set up on a desk flat
would be totally flat response and then the cal feature it so this is really
really amazing okay these come with a tiny little microphone called the arc
microphone and what it is is a reference microphone that you actually plug it
straight into the back of the speaker itself with an XLR to eighth inch cable
that is included with with the package and you hold this cal preset button down
the monitor releases a twenty to twenty sign wave sweep four times and it
automatically calibrates itself to the rooms you set up the mic at your
listening position hold that button down it does the sweep and it actually
figures out using DSP digital signal processing inside the unit what it needs
to do to the signal to make it the most accurate that it can be in that
particular room this is such an incredible feature I have taken it to
quite a few different environments used it in bedrooms living rooms and used
this art calibration feature that they’ve designed and it’s staggering
what it can do it automatically transforms the response of these
monitors so it’s basically identical wherever you go no matter if you’re in a
big room a small room a treated room an untreated room low ceilings high
ceilings tight walls walls far away it doesn’t matter this calibration feature
goes in and tunes the speaker automatically to the room that you’re in
and it really works you know I was recently in Las Vegas doing some filming
for my other YouTube channel my Travel Channel just called nomadic barred and
was doing some mixing on these while we were there just in our hotel room in Las
Vegas used that calibration feature and it made it sound exactly like when I had
them set up here is a completely different size of room completely
different configuration but it still just somehow magically went in there
with the DSP made it sound identical to when I had them set up here it’s such an
innovative feature it’s such a cool feature and it’s so easy to use you know
again if you guys do anything mobile these are just an awesome solution absolutely
awesome solution because they can do this you can set them up in any room you
can set them up in a car you can set them up in a tent it doesn’t matter
where you run this calibration procedure on each speaker with the little arc
microphone and you’re in business you know it’s gonna automatically turn the
speakers to sound exactly how you would recognize them the sound if you get used
to it doing that calibration wherever you have them set up it’s it’s amazing I
have no idea how I allowed went in and her excuse me I came all to media went
in and did that like what the programming of the eye I have no idea
that’s amazing you know it took me years to learn how to turn a room and really
set up monitors to sound great in the room and all this stuff they’ve written
a little piece of software that lives inside these and does the same exact
thing so just like the coolest feature in the world on any set of speakers I’ve
ever seen now moving on from there we have sensitivities so in case you’re
hooking up through consumer-level minus 10 gear you can change the
sensitivity we then of course have dedicated volume control we have a TRS
XLR combo jack for input this little eight-inch arc mic and which again the
cable does come with the package that’s very handy and then a USB and in case
you want to just run it directly off of your PC power switch and a three-prong
IEC input for the power now these are rear ported for the base okay
the only gripe that I have is that sometimes they do have a little bit of
port Rumble or kind of port buzz which is not uncommon on ported speakers
especially rear reported speakers they can at times especially when you’re
really really pushing the signal it can just start to buzz or rattle a little
bit it’s not terrible I’ve seen it in lots of other monitors I’m hopefully i
IK in future generations of the speakers we’ll get that worked out because that’s
really my one complaint with these other than that in terms of sound quality I’ve
set a number of people down in front of these speakers and hit play on a mix and
universally every single one of them just goes Wow
because the bass response and the volume on these things I mean they sound like a
big beefy pair of 8-inch monitors it’s incredible I mean I really
have no idea between the arc room tuning processing thing and then just how loud
and punchy and accurate these things are I have no idea how I did it there there
you know I would trust these hands down as like mine
main studio monitoring source they sound that good they’re that accurate and the
low-end response you know my dad you guys have seen my dad on the channel a
couple of times we’ve done a few videos at his studio he’s Grammy nominated
producer engineer absolutely amazing at what he does and he’s got great ears
he’s worked on tons and tons of different pairs of speakers in his day I
sat him down in front of these and the first thing he asked me was where’s the
subwoofer because the bass is really that powerful and they get loud they get
punchy but they’re still really really accurate all the way through the
frequency range even up into the highs the highs are really really detailed
it’s neutral throughout the whole range they’re really just phenomenal speakers
I really can’t say enough positive things about them again this kind of
bass port rattle or buzz is the one drawback to them I really wish that that
was something that didn’t happen with them but again that’s not uncommon on
imported speakers specifically rear ported speakers it helps the bass
response a lot and it helps give them that punch but when you’ve got it
cranked that you’re doing a lot of low frequency stuff at high volumes they do
tend to rattle a little bit so IK if you’re watching this that would be like
the only thing to tweak on this guy I’m sure it’s something in the cabinet
design or you know I’m not really entirely sure what it would be but
that’s really my only gripe other than that they’re really compact they’re
pretty lightweight that is way a couple of pounds each got a very cool stand
system on the bottom just this simple little kind of flat head screw and you
can adjust these to be at a variety of different angles they also come with
rubber mats so you can lay them horizontally if you so desire but
they’re just they’re amazing speakers at any form factor or price but when you
factor in the art calibration the fact that they’re so compact and portable and
lightweight and just how good they sound and how much low-end they push they’re
absolutely amazing speakers I cannot recommend them highly enough like I said
they’re 350 each or seven I know for the pair so they’re a little bit pricey you
know they’re definitely gonna be a step up from your basic like KRKs or Presonus
monitors or anything like that but I think that what you get in terms of tech
feature set and just overall sound quality it’s definitely worth it
especially again in this mobile production world you know I’m like I
said I’m gonna be traveling a ton next year and going to all kinds of different
countries and doing a lot of production work these are the perfect
solution for that they would be great in just a home studio environment as well
or you know for video editors or anything like that but ultimately they
are designed to be really really portable and they absolutely kill it for
that purpose so highly recommended 10 out of 10 100 out of 100 five stars
these things are absolutely awesome if you get the opportunity opportunity to
hear a pair or buy a pair I definitely recommend it but what do you guys think
have you used these monitors I know that there was a predecessor of these the I
allowed micro mains which I’ve also heard amazing things about they’re a
little bit smaller more compact even lighter weight and more designed for
portability everybody has told me that those also sound awesome so if you guys
have used those or used this or have another really nice portable pair of
monitors that you prefer definitely let me know in the comments down below
always appreciate hearing from you guys if you have not subscribed to the
channel yet please do so that really helps us out click that notification
