When you work at home, what is your monitoring level? I think you need a certain level to really hear whats going on in the lower end of the mix. Or what is your opinion? A general wisdom is, that you get the most linear frequency response … …when monitoring with, I think, 85 dB. I agree, that you need a certain monitoring level to be able to mix. But in a homestudio this is often not possible. So I try to monitor loud only for a short time, when I am mixing… …but most of the time, when I do creative work, I monitor at a low level. This is also to spare my ears. I don´t want to ruin a mix in the evening… that could have been a good mix, if I had done it with fresh ears. Do you also use headphones? I use headphones quite often. Especially to estimate reverb or the room itself. I think it is also exciting to hear all the details and do fine-tuning,… …because you hear exactly what happens. Even though you don´t have a good view on the mix itself,… …because headphones can reproduce details that speakers can´t. When are you mixing? Does it go hand in hand with composing? Or are composing and mixing two separate stages. Inherently I try do do basic mixing on the go. But of course you make mistakes when your focused on the creative part. So there is always a separate mixing stage in the end… …to make everything fit perfectly. Are there certain plugins, for example equalizers, that you use in every production? Definitively! There are some plugins I use in every production. If we talk about equalizers, I would say… …everything that comes from UAD is really worth using… ..because their signal processing is really high-class. I never miss a manley in my productions. This is also true for the cambridge eq… …or, if I think of native plugins, sonnox has really high-class plugins. It is great to work with these plugins. How many reverbs do you use in a song, and which? I think in my songs I use about 4 or 5 different halls or rooms,… …and they all have certain tasks. For special effects I sometimes use cheap plugins. But when it comes to room simulation… …I use high-class plugins from UAD. For example RealVerb,… …or the EMT140. This is for classic reverberation. Do you use any plugins in your master-channel when composing and mixing? That happens, but… …I would not recommend it. Sometimes you only try to compensate for the acoustic situation in you studio with this. For example you could use an equalizer to compensate for an acoustic problem,… …that you already know about. But I would recommend not to use any plugins in the master channel till the end of the production. This way you have a clear picture of the mix.
