La Flûte à Bec – L’Instrumentarium de l’Insolite

This episode is dedicated to all my colleagues musicians intervening in school and college music teachers all the stories told are based on true stories and if not the job is ok? yeah, it’s quiet in fact, what are you doing now? I’m a music teacher in schools ah, the recorder In college, every time you played and you were bullshitting with one point less, then two, then three I had fun being a kid trying to recreate the brown noise as in south park. I played the hymn to joy blowing in with the nose With the recorder we learned how to unroll them We had competitions that would play the most recorders simultaneously, I was 3, 2 in the nose, one in the mouth but no one wanted to lend me more Me, I was throwing up to not play I was doing some trowing glairs contests I used it like a blowgun I used it as a gun to snipe the music teacher and students The recorder is a fucking lightsaber I spent more time engraving my recorder than blowing in I had fun making soap bubbles with a recorder I made it a bang I burned my hand with a hot iron to not play Anyway the recorder is not a real instrument Ok we’re going to get thinks right THE INSTRUMENTARIUM OF THE UNUSUAL THE RECORDER Welcome to the instrumentarium of the unusual Today, we are going to tackle a particular subject because I am not going to introduce you to an unusual instrument but rather restore some truths about an instrument victim of his bad reputation Do you remember the recorder, taught in college and traumatized a good part of our generation I had my own experience on flute lessons at school Well, since I was a musician, I was a little less intolerant about this instrument, that could be some of my classmates For this episode, I wondered how the teaching of the recorder in college was harmful for the latter It should be known that the flute was chosen for its practical side, not expensive, easy to do in the context of a large production solid and compact it can be carried in school bags And, in my opinion, this is one of the first things that made him wrong Indeed, this noble instrument was very easily attached to the role of simple school supplies findable in supermarkets for a handful of coins We considered it equal to a compass or a rule. In addition, recorders were often poorly made and therefore, poorly tuned. Two flutes of different brands do not have the same accuracy So imagine 25 to 30 flutes not being tuned in the same way and playing together a real cacophony. And normally a recorder must be tuned by pulling a little on the mouthpiece to grow the pipe did we really take the time to give it properly? For ease of play, we first learned the most affordable fingerings unfortunately, these play in the acute register of the flute and it’s always the same, in drovers it makes the eardrums twist in addition, we always have the unfortunate tendency to want to play louder than the neighbor to be heard in the lot What an auditory delight! other problem we had a tendency to believe that a music teacher knew necessarily play all the instruments, I am well placed to know even with the greatest will in the world it is still difficult to master the practice of a large panel of instruments and how to teach something properly if you do not really master it because, yes, the recorder has his own learning it’s a bit like asking a Spanish teacher to teach Italian because they are similar languages you would find it rather absurd, the same goes for instrumental practice today, what tends to excite me is that we reduce French music education at school to the learning of the flute, but, no, being well placed to know it, pedagogy, in this matter has evolved since your stay in college already, flute teaching was withdrawn from school programs in 2008 although some music teachers still teach it. and the new teachers in place have a more diversified approach, for example through singing, body percussion which consists of doing different rhythm, different sounds by tapping on various parts of our body or to learn from practices that are popular with young people such as cup song or school band the musical culture always recalls our great classics but do not forget to incorporate all the styles like world music, French music, rock or contemporary even if you are very much looking at the word “recorder”, I noticed during my research that there were still a lot of people who appreciated this teaching because they wanted to make music, but for reasons X or Y had to settle for college lessons or, simply because they fell in love with this instrument by discovering it there and that they decided by themselves to go further in this teaching, exceeding the mockery that can go around this practice I have the concrete example in my own orchestra which is called pixelophonia, or jump man our classical guitarist practice within the orchestra the recorder The latter told me that he had discovered this instrument in college and that he had particularly liked And it is to go beyond prejudices and restore certain truths that I will present to you, in order to put it back in its rightful place To begin, the recorder is a wind instrument of the woods family She has several names like obviously flute, but also soft flute and flute right The history of the recorder is particularly long because of its age and it has a multitude of cousins but we are going to focus primarily on the model that we know the most it is composed of a beak in which we will blow to direct a jet of air against the bevel The latter will cut the air in two, one part remains inside the pipe, the other is expelled to the outside creating an oscillation around the bevel, like a kind of vibration and producing a hissing sound most of you know the plastic recorder but the material mainly used for its manufacture is wood However, just like for violins or guitars, we do not use any wood Depending on the original tree, the sound is not going to be the same. Nowadays, we will rather favor exotic species or, for example, maple, plum, pear, olive and ebony, but according to the period we will find sweet flutes made of fruit trees widely used in the middle ages or European boxwood, precious wood, because they grow slowly and are particularly used in the Baroque era We can find more rare models, because made in a precious material such as ivory, narwhal horn or tortoiseshell This instrument is probably one of the oldest instruments. From the paleolitical era, we find many traces of bone flutes pierced or not with holes But the wooden recorder makes its appearance in the 14th century According to the times the uses, the regions and the making of the instrument, the fingerings were very different about our flute, this is inspired by German fingerings, simpler but some notes sound wrong baroque fingerings, a little more complicated but sounding much more just A little tip to recognize if your flute is played in the German or Baroque way German, the 4th hole is bigger and the 5th is smaller, baroque the 4th is smaller and the 5th is larger To make this episode, I recovered two different flutes, used in school without really paying attention and when I learned this story, I could see directly that I had a typical example of baroque flute and typical German flute yet another example that did not contribute to the soundness of a musical ensemble in the classroom the recorder is part of a big family. The one we know the most is actually the soprano flute but there are different sizes depending on the desired tone, just as we can find in the family of strings rubbed violin, viola, cello and double bass For the most famous flutes, we have the sopranino flute which measures 20 cm, the soprano flute, the one we know, which measures 32 cm, the alto flute which measures 47 cm, the tenor flute which measures 63 cm the bass flute measures 94 cm and the double bass flute measures approximately 1m25 there is also the exilent flute which is the smallest of all, the large flute bass, the flute under bass and the flute under bass which is the largest of the flutes As a bonus, here is the largest flutes of the world built by Adriane breukink like all instruments, the bigger the latter, the more grave it will sound the smaller it is, the more it will sound high in terms of technique, it is quite processed. Yes, blowing bleatin in and butchering the holes is not enough to know how to play If we want to properly study its playing technique and expand its repertoire we’re going to have to look at much more complex fingerings than we might think Already, it requires a lot of coordination at the finger level, even if it does not require muscle strength the complexity of certain sequences and split fingerings, make this instrument quite difficult to play the importance of breath is not to be taken lightly because depending on the air flow used, we do not get the same notes and you have to learn to master that. There is also the articulation of the fingers that is not given, This is what makes it possible to put relief and expression in the music You have to learn to breathe by mastering syllable articulatory such as T, D, K and G In short, full of small details that are just waiting to be mastered to fully enjoy the richness of the right flute There is still a lot to say about this instrument, I myself am very impression unfortunately, I had to hide some passages and fly over others otherwise my video would last too long in the meantime, I sincerely hope that my little presentation will make you see with another eye this noble instrument which must be considered at its fair value. In the meantime I tell you to the next and let the music be with you traduction : Chantal Tison-Aldeguer
