Arranging is a very important part of pre-production
before you get to the studio. Now arranging essentially means if you have a tune, a basic
song, maybe you’ve written it on a piano or an acoustic guitar, you need to figure out
what other instruments are going to be involved on that tune. For example, if you want to
incorporate orchestral instruments or symphonic instruments or jazz instruments, maybe a horn
section of some kind, you need to have all of this written out explicitly before you
get to the studio. In the next clip we’ll talk about writing out the charts for these
pieces. But essentially, you want to have some sort of vision as far as taking each
song one at a time and figuring out what instruments are going to be involved in that tune and
also the parts. So maybe you’re going to have a string section in the beginning of the tune
and a horn section in the middle, and then have a drum corps at the end. Or if it’s going
to be as simple as just having a solo acoustic guitar all the way through.
