Alright. Now we are going to talk about punching
in. What is punching in? I am glad you asked! Because what punching in is, is say you are
recording a rap vocal. You are in there doing your thing and then you make a mistake. And
then, you stop. You do not have to record all of the stuff that you did, that you just
recorded. You could just, what we call in the recording studio business, is punch in.
And, what you want to do is when you are punching in, is have the studio engineer or the person
recording you rewind it back a little bit. Kind of remember where you were and where
you messed up. But, before you get to the point of where you messed up you need to start
rapping along with what you hear in your headphones. And, the studio engineer will cut where the
messed up part is. Start rapping along with what you are hearing in your headphones and
then just keep going once you hear your vocals stop. A lot of times people just want to punch
in where they started off, where they messed up at. The point that they messed up at. And
when that happens is it gives it a punchy sound, it is like, you can hear it it is like
you hear one vocal and then it punches. Goes to the next vocal, but what you want to do
is you want to make it smooth. You do not want make it sound like you punched in. You
want to make it like a smooth transition like you rapped the whole song from beginning to
end and there was no punch-ins. And, the best way to do that is, is where you messed up
at have the engineer rewind it back a little bit so it can give you time to get back in
there. Catch the flow, rap along with yourself that you hear in your headphones and then,
once the punch in part stops, keep on going. Just keep on recording and you will have a
good clean sounding punch in and punch in as many times as you can, you know, to make
it clear. If you mess up just a little part, go back. Just punch that line in and do it.
But, always rap with your vocals. Rap with it to make that punch in sound as clear as
possible.
