Ricky Gervais Returning to Host Golden Globes for a Record Fifth Time | THR News

– After repeatedly saying he
would never take the job again, Rickey Gervais is taking that back and returning to host the Golden Globes for a record fifth time. (air whooshing) The comedian previously hosted the event from 2010 to 2012, before returning for
the fourth time in 2016, and just couldn’t resist getting
back in the hosting saddle for the 2020 ceremony. But this will be his
absolute last time, you guys, for real this time. Gervais released a statement regarding the exciting news saying, “Once again, “they’ve made me an offer I can’t refuse. “But this is the very
last time I’m doing this, “which could make for a fun evening.” Of course, with Gervais
back at the hosting helm, viewers can expect some
good old-fashioned roasting peppered throughout the show. The comedian’s previous hosting stints were marked by infamous jokes
aimed at Hollywood A-listers such as Bruce Willis,
Mel Gibson, Ben Affleck, and Jennifer Lawrence, just to name a few. And of course, a few
zingers at the expense of the organizers of the grand event, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Paul Telegdy, chairman
of NBC Entertainment, also spoke out about the news, saying, “There is always a palpable
electricity in the room “when Ricky takes the Globes stage. “His return as master of
ceremonies at the Golden Globes “is much anticipated. “We can’t wait to see what
he has up his sleeve.” And as Lorenzo Soria,
President of HFPA, puts it, “With Ricky Gervais at the helm, “we can always expect the unexpected.” The 2019 Globes were co-hosted
by actress, Sandra Oh, and comedian, Andy Samberg. But the total viewership
for NBC’s broadcast of the 76th edition of the event, was a tiny bit smaller
than 2018’s 19.02 million, and hit a three-year low. The 77th Golden Globes is
set to air live on NBC, January 5th, 2020 at 8:00 p.m. All right, for more award
