S. Koreans aged 65 or older account for 15% of country’s population

The number of people in South Korea aged 65
or older has exceeded 8 million for the first time,… reflecting the population’s rapid
aging. According to data from the interior ministry,…
that age group as of late last year accounted for over 15 percent of the country entire
populationn. It was an increase from the previous year
of around 380-thousand. On the other hand, Koreans younger than 15
fell to 6-point-4 million,… a decrease of 160-thousand.
The total registered population also increased by 23-thousand to 51-point-8 million.
That’s the slowest rise since the figure was first compiled in 2008.
