The Prism Records ~ Saisons des Cerises

The Prism Records ~ Saisons des Cerises

Does a music sound better if it is sung in your native language? It’s a weird question, isn’t it? And yet, it is worth asking! Since most of Touhou’s circles are in themselves Japanese, a language that for many in the West, is not as popular as other options. In my opinion, the mother tongue of a singer can either make it sound angrier, joyful, sadder or overall more emotional given the tone of the music. And in the latter case, I feel like “Saisons des Cerises” by Raven’s Jig nailed it perfectly. Like a cherry tree blooming… How is it so good, then? Well, starting with the structure of the album, if we do not count the instrumentals, the album offers us a total of five songs. I…think I’m starting to see a pattern here. But unlike other albums I’ve presented so far though, most of the lyrics here are sung like ballads. Little stories spoken by the characters themselves. This means that everything from word placement to wordplay is written for said character. For example! This allows the Prismriver sisters to sing turn by turn. With Lyrica being more straightforward. Merlin having a higher pitch and being a bit more cheerful as a result. And Lunasa having a more down-to-earth and melancholic tone. This not only makes each song unique but also replayable, since it’s almost like you’re being with the characters themselves. Though, if I have to be honest… This wouldn’t be possible without the superb voice of AKHTS. Her soft and almost hushed voice might sound weird at first. But when you get used to it, it balances up the powerful instrumentals of Onne. And makes it almost sound like someone’s telling you a bedtime story. Well, maybe I’m going a bit far though. Fairy Tales usually don’t have such big drums in the background. So! How about you join me on the snowy path leading that giant cherry tree? Surely that will make this winter much more interesting than the last…
