[Music] Granta mask the only record by antemasque or anti mask or an Tomas or on a mask this band anti mask is another band by Omar rodríguez-lópez and Cedric bixler-zavala from at the drive-in and Morris bolter I really like this record actually uh for me this is a better record than the new at the driving record this record has flea as the bass player not to say that like that’s the reason it’s better but uh he does play really well in this record I just really like the songs I think these songs are made with a lot more hooks and a lot more intensity than the new driving songs and and by that I mean the new record of they did an EP called diamante after the new record inter alia which you know has in my opinion slightly better songs but that’s just three songs this I really like I actually think this is the best thing they’ve done since the first two Mars Volta records and that’s coming from a fan you know like I’m a fan of theirs I try to be a realist fan I try not to be somebody who just likes everything that Omar does but um I can just go through the songs man it’s like 4:00 a.m. travel song right like The Devil’s son in the lurch if you haven’t heard this record I would listen to in the lurch memento mori another great song Rome armed to the teeth people forget when I saw him like they played the whole record I mean there’s like if it’s an LP it’s like maximum what was his fate like 40 45 minutes so they played the whole record live and it was incredible I mean I personally think they should just be doing this I don’t think they should be doing it and driving or mars volta i think there should be doing this for a few years I think that’s how home art works he works when he does something and then over does it for a period of time and then at some point once he’s bored with it he should just go to the next thing him doing at the drive-in now with him talking about maybe doing Mars Volta again it just seems like he doesn’t have the drive to do it it seems like he’s being forced almost like people want to hear these things so at this point he’s like okay now I’ll go to this no go to that for me nobody was asking for antemasque I mean this this man didn’t exist nobody knew who this man was knew what this man would offer so when they did this record no one I was skeptical because they already have two other bands why do another band well after I heard it I’m like just don’t do that the driving again me because I think that the drivin ended where it should have ended I think relationship of command that was the last thing that drive it should have done them reforming and then doing more tours that’s fine but then doing another record and I just don’t think anybody should be doing things they don’t believe in and and to me it just feels like a bit forced them doing at the drivin and mars volta especially by the LAT by the last two three records I was just thinking that they lost the plot just meandering in this weird musical landscape of prog punk whatever the fuck it was when they did this it felt like they weren’t beholden to any rules that they said because these are rules that Omar sets for himself it’s not like anybody’s forcing him to do anything without the driving he’s trying really specifically to get that relationship up relationship of command sound with mars volta he’s really specifically trying to overdo things put as many guitars as possible do King Crimson mum crack type of music you know and that’s not me saying that he succeeds doing King Chris I’m a crack that’s just me saying like that’s what he tries to do but with this it’s more of a really specific hardcore indie rock thing you know that’s it works it works because his guitar playing is working alongside of Cedric smuggles he doesn’t need more members and the drummer the bass player and his own guitar maybe he will need a rhythm guitarist at some point so then he can just wail for longer but I think he works better with these limitations when he’s left to go crazy with mars volta stuff it just it’s stale you know it just doesn’t get to the heights of stuff like this or early at the drive-in or the first two Mars Volta records because I think he just he’s not responding to the music he’s responding to himself it’s like again if you’re letting the music dictate what you’re doing I think you will succeed because the music will guide you but when you use other elements that’s why you do certain things like okay I want to make an epic song so I need 10 guitars let’s was gonna make it epic more guitars more drums more instruments and whatever it’s like that’s not a real reaction to the music that’s you more reacting to what you wanna in some ways accomplish but it has nothing to do with the music you know you reactants the music means really specifically you write a riff or you write a melody and then from there you build and you add and you wrist and decide when to stop I think Omar works best in this scenario it’s just him Cedric flea playing bass and whoever drummer they need I mentioned fully because fully played bass on the at least the first if not the first two Mars Volta records but flea is a really good bass player but since he’s not technically a part of the bands or Mars Volta like when I saw him in anthemic Lee wasn’t playing live he’s a really good session player basically he’s like Jimmy Page playing you know the solos for the WHO right so I think that’s how all these players work with best these limitations make them make the best music go as excessive as to do with mars volta but you only have three instruments your guitar the bass and the drums do it and this is what I what happens with Mars Volta it’s like okay now at the congas and at like 40 fucking guitars on top and at some point it just it’s a cacophony with no reason when I saw it’s live I was so happy because this is what I want them to do it comes from the heart it comes from the gut and then going back to the driving and then basically leaving this as a orphan kind of sad right now I just would prefer to see what they can do with this band [Music]
