Why Crosley Record Players Are Awesome | Collecting Vinyl Records 101

– Hey there music nerds,
welcome to Vinyl 101. I am Sam the Record Man,
we are Vinyl Junkies. Today’s topic will be me
making a serious argument as to why I think Crosley
turntables or any of these suitcase type turntables
are absolutely awesome. And I’m gonna make this argument with no exaggeration whatsoever. If you like this type of content, (laughs) at this point you’re probably not sure, but click on the like button,
ring that bell up on top and more videos will be coming to you. I’ll began by saying hat
I think who buy vinyl or people that continue to buy vinyl past the fad or cool phase are people who don’t buy music, that’s
not why buying vinyl. Sure it’s music, but
music is for free right, so they’re buying an experience. No when you think of
experience, it’s relative. So, I mean, if you’ve
been collecting records since forever and you
look at Crosly turntable, look this ones a Vinyl Style turntable, I received it as a promo so
this is what I’m gonna use, but it’s the basic thing right. These turntables, are so,
I mean, they’re trashed and I completely understand why. So I’ll make the argument
as to why I think everybody’s right when they
say that Crosley is crap and then I’ll tell you
why it doesn’t matter. ‘kay so, yeah look, the
turntables don’t have a good time tone arm, I
mean, it’s all plastic. There’s no weight, counter
weight at the end so that the table balances properly. The cartridge is super heavy so it’ll grind into your record. It’s a cheap plastic platter. It’s gonna be wobbly as hell and the records bigger
than the actual platter, it’s a disaster. The speakers come out of here. So anybody who is kind
of looking to buy vinyl and is beginning here and expecting this big revelation in sound,
that’s not the market, that’s not the experience. That’s why I mean that
experience relative, okay? So all of you guys, I get
it, the Crosley Cruisers, garbage they are, okay? But you also have to
understand that these products aren’t meant for folks like me, they’re not meant for folks like you guys who already had a Crosley
maybe and moved on because you liked records enough. ‘Kay, so this is where it
is that I will get into why I think the Crosley’s are amazing. This turntable right, before I
set it up here for this video was upstairs in my daughter’s
room, she’s 13 years old. I put this turntable in her
the room since the age of 12 and I guess through words like put this turntable in there
is kinda, sort of, real, ’cause she’s not into
vinyl yet, she’s not. And I mean she’s got a
nice stack, you know, she likes it what I do and everything, but the boy bands and the types of bands that she likes now aren’t on vinyl and she
doesn’t understand the format. So, streaming very easy for her, ‘kay? Now, the turntable is there, at one point if she picks it up and drops the needle on
this stack of records that I give her and she
spending time in her room, it might clicked something. Maybe not, I’m not sure,
but it might click something in the sense that the experience
that I’m talking about that is completely relative
and it’s really, I think, at the base of why it is that
people get turned on to vinyl and stick with it, past the first Crosley and into other gear. Is because there’s a
fascination, you know, there’s the record turning
and you have to be there to spend the 15 minutes to
change the sides of the record and read liner notes and
then entire experience. Now that entire experience takes time, it’s definitely not as
fast as a Spotify playlist or any of that type of
stuff, which I mean, that’s where she listens to her music but if ever there’s that
point where, you know. There’s people that connect
with music very deeply, so we’re talking about beyond
the playlists, you know? They like listening to a
record all the way through and absorb it. In order to absorb something, it can’t be just a part
of the environment, you need to sit down with it. Vinyl does that, it doesn’t
matter what you play on. So, a Crosley, if a
Crosley is where a kid, a young kid, drops a
needle for the first time and understand the allure
of connecting that way with with the music, Crosley we owe a debt of gratitude to because that’s where it all started. And I can promise you
something, you move on. As somebody who started what
a crappy turntable guys, I mean, my first
turntable was one of those all in one Lloyd’s and I played the first record I’ve ever
bought which I’ve talked about ad nauseam, Kiss,
“Rock and Roll Over”, this is my actual copy. I mean this copies been
played on a crappy turntable and I still play it on my good turntable. Of course I’ve upgraded
because I like it that much and because, to me, listening to music, that immersive experience
is that something that I need in my life. You know, I need art like that in life, but not necessarily for everybody. All this is to say that
no matter what gear I have now I still remember my
Lloyd’s all in one turntable and that stayed with me
for my first 50 records and I had to work my ass off to come up with the $100 it buy the used. But I did it and all of those things are what’s attached to everything
that’s here right now, that’s how it started. You remember that it
doesn’t matter if, you know, your first doesn’t have to be Ferrari for it to be memorable, it could be a beat up old Honda Civic, you’ll remember that forever. And that my friends,
if we use the analogy, is why I think Crosley
turntables are amazing, they’re good starting point and they are absolutely adequate to introducing the experience
of listening deeply. I’m gonna turn the comments
section over to you guys. Do do you agree? Do you disagree? Are there any points that
you think I’ve missed? Please feel free to use
it, have your voice heard and let’s have a
conversation about music man that’s what this is all about. By the way, if you do have a young kid that you want to introduce to vinyl and you’re not sure if they’re into it, can I give you a little tip? The best place to look for
these suitcase type turntables, just look on Facebook Marketplace. They are everywhere,
everyone’s getting rid of them. Either because they got outta the fad or because they liked it
enough to want to upgrade to quote unquote real
gear, that’s the place. All right folks, comment section, yours, subscribe if you like it. Ding ding, hit that bell up
there for the notifications. Every time a video comes you’ll see it. Until the next time, Sam
the Record Man, out, boom!
